Challenging Standards in the Feminine Care Industry: An Interview with the Founder of The Honey Pot Co

Challenging Standards in the Feminine Care

Industry: An Interview with the Founder of

The Honey Pot Co

Bea Feliu Espada

“I was gifted my life’s work and I didn’t want to take that for granted. I wanted to be respectful of it because it was given to me for a reason. I felt like if it worked for me it would work for other women. I accepted that thought and assembled the right team and that’s gotten us to where we are today.”

The average woman will use between 12,000 to 16,000 disposable pads, panty liners and tampons in her lifetime. Every time she showers or bathes she washes her “Honey Pot”. The products a woman uses for her feminine hygiene needs are personal and are usually brands she’s been using for a long time. There have been several newcomers to the world of feminine hygiene products in the past several years and I’m glad about it. Only recently have we as women had options for more natural and organic products that challenge those brands that have been on the market for decades.

Almost a year and a half ago I did a clean sweep of my home and got rid of products with questionable ingredients. This sweep included cleaning products, traditional laundry detergents, home fragrance, body care products, makeup and feminine hygiene products. In search of ‘cleaner’, more natural products I came across The Honey Pot Co, the 1st complete feminine care system powered by herbs! They note that every vagina is different, which is why they have 3 different systems, each designed to cleanse, protect and balance, depending on your needs.

The Honey Pot has three different lines to cleanse, protect and balance including feminine hygiene washes and wipes. Their menstrual line includes 100% cotton tampons and herbal infused, CHEMICAL FREE pads (My personal favorite!). They’ve recently added a moisturizing lubricant to their line of products along with herbal infused panty sprays that are free of artificial fragrances or toxic chemicals!

The products are “Made by Humans with Vaginas for Women with Vaginas”

I love The Honey Pot Co so much that I have a “Honey Pot Drawer” containing all my fave products! So, as excited as I’ve been about my discovery of these products, I was even more excited when I learned about the Founder of The Honey Pot Co, Beatrice Dixon, who was gifted the formulation for the initial wash by one of her ancestors in a dream!

A couple weeks ago I interviewed Bea and chatted with her about The Honey Pot Co, her life as an entrepreneur and what self-care means to her! Check out my interview with her below!

Dr. April: Hi there Bea! Let’s talk a little bit about how you came up with the idea for the Honey Pot? What inspired it?

Beatrice: Well, I came up with the idea because of an infection I had for almost a year that I couldn’t get rid of. Literally, one night, I went to sleep and had a dream, kind of right before I woke up in the morning, of sitting down with one of my ancestors and she gave me a list of ingredients. She told me that these ingredients would help me solve my problem. Well, I woke up, I wrote it down, I tried it & low and behold, it worked and that’s what really pushed me to create the line. I felt like if it could work for me then it could very well work for other women that may or may not be dealing with this type of situation. We did testing for a couple of years on as many women as we could find. A lot of those women were having some of the same issues that I was having. Then the opportunity came along to launch at the Bronner Brothers Hair Show in 2014. We attended the show. We took 600 bottles of product and we basically sold out in a weekend. It was crazy!

Dr April: So when you had this dream and your ancestor presented the ingredients to you, did it makes sense to you at the time….the herbs that she presented?

Beatrice: Yes, because some of the things I had been using individually. So with some of the things I had been doing individually, if you add a couple more things to it and have it like a potion, it will act like a medicine and will heal you. It was very simple things: Apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, rose, lavender – very simple ingredients. It wasn’t anything that was super astronomical. It was just knowing to put them together. I also have a history of working in pharmacy for almost 10 years so I knew how to put those type of things together. It was just a matter of knowing “what” to put together.

Dr. April : Well, you know our ancestors knew how to use what they had available to heal themselves. Antibiotics and modern-day medicines weren’t always around!

Beatrice: Exactly, they had to use what was available to them!

Dr. April: So what made you consider turning this into a business? You could have just made the formulation and used it for yourself. What made you take that entrepreneurial leap?

Bea: It was feeling like I was gifted my life’s work and I didn’t want to take that for granted. I wanted to be respectful of it because it was given to me for a reason. I felt like if it worked for me it would work for other women. I accepted that thought and assembled the right team and that’s gotten us to where we are today.

Dr. April: So can you tell us why these products are beneficial to women and how they break the mold compared with traditional products available in the feminine care products industry?

Bea: Everything we create at The Honey Pot Co has herbs in it. Everything with the exception of our tampons. I’m a heavy believer in herbs and oils. You should see how I travel! I don’t even travel without essential oils. If I get sick or have a problem I turn to garlic, apple cider vinegar and things that I know are going to work to get you better. That’s just how my brain thinks. In curating the line, I think about it the same way. So I think that we are breaking the mold in feminine hygiene. We’re not just looking at feminine hygiene and feminine cleansing as it relates to the bottom line. We’re not just looking at this and asking how can we make money. I’m thinking, how do I make something that makes sense with the other products I’m using, but also, how am I going to develop something that can change a woman’s life or make her something that she needs. That’s really the way I think about innovation. I’m looking at how to put together the best line to support women in their daily lives. Every woman may not use every single one of the products, but we want a woman to be able to use at least one product out of the line.

Dr. April: So did you know BEFORE you started The Honey Pot Co {or} while doing your research when developing your products about all the pesticides and chemicals that are used in growing of the cotton and manufacturing of some traditional feminine care products?

Bea: It comes through being in the natural foods industry for a while when I worked for Whole Foods. I know that cotton, tobacco and corn are in the top 3 of products that are genetically modified. So it came through research and learning about what is really being done to our crops.

Dr. April: So, I’ve been buying your products in Target and Whole Foods. I literally have a Honey Pot Drawer that I keep all my products in lol! Tell me about the process of getting your products into retail because I don’t think most people realize what really goes into getting products into retail. You can’t create a product, produce just 1,000 units and think that will work with a major retailer. How long did that take you? That’s a HUGE move!

Bea: It takes a lot! In the beginning, when we got the “Yes” from Target, it was cool until I’m like “Oh sh*t, now I gotta go figure out how I’m going to get the inventory!” You can’t just buy 10,000 units. You have to buy 50,000 units or more.

Dr. April: See, that is mind-blowing to me! 50,000 units at one time!

Bea: ….well, I’m buying 10X that now! So, yes it is mind-blowing

Dr. April: But, you’re doing it and that’s so awesome!

Bea: It becomes easier. The challenges we have are being able to “rob Peter to pay Paul”, sometimes to buy inventory to supply 5,000 stores right away. It’s always a puzzle with trying to figure out how you’re going to be able to fulfill the orders you have to fulfill, make more product, etc. It’s challenging and I don’t ever see it not being a challenge, but it’s what we signed up for when we started this business.

Bea Feliu Espada

Dr. April: So, I’ve been talking a lot about self-care lately and my upcoming empowerment events are focusing on self-care. What does Self Care mean to you?

Bea: Self care starts off with how you feel about yourself, how you love yourself, how you respect yourself, how you honor yourself, how you see yourself before you wonder about how others see you. Then it trickles out to what you use on your skin, how do you take care of yourself, what do you eat, who do you love, who loves you back? Do you offer yourself kindness? Do you love yourself enough to where you can love other people? That’s the constant self-work that I’m doing to really make sure I’m honing in on what it means to be who I am and what it means to love me and respect me. I’m just now learning that. I feel like self-care starts at both a conscious and subconscious level. It has to start internally first.

Dr April: Lord knows you cannot pour from an empty cup!

Bea: You’re right. You can’t! You have to figure out how to fill your cup back up.

Dr. April: What are some of the ways that we, as informed women, can share the benefits of your products with others?

Bea: I thinks it’s as simple as telling somebody. Ask them to try it out and then tell somebody else. Social media is another great way. We appreciate any word of mouth that we can get because a lot of our business comes from word of mouth.

Dr. April: What do you see for the future of The Honey Pot Co?

Bea: We are going chain-wide in Target. We are already in certain Target stores around the country (over 1,000 of them). In Whole Foods – we are in both the mid Atlantic region of the US and in the South East (TN, GA, South Carolina, North Carolina, AL). Our products are also available on our website. Very soon we will be entering into another mass market retailer and you will see our products on those shelves as well! (Update: Since this interview was conducted in March 2019 – that major retailer is none other than Walmart!!!)

Don’t Ever Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle

Don’t Ever Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle!

It’s January 2019 – a new year and 365 days worth of opportunities to live the life of your dreams! I pride myself in striving to be the best version of myself each and every day!

I recently had a conversation with a young lady, high school age, who felt that she was being teased about being an “overachiever”, straight-A student, etc. This hit home for me because I’ve heard many of these same things throughout my life due to my desire to strive for excellence in all that I do. I immediately told her, “My dear, don’t ever let anyone dull your sparkle!”

A couple of months ago I came across a quote from Myleik Teele on social media that says something to the effect of “You’ll always be too much for people who aren’t doing much”! Typically, those bullies that have so much to say are those who don’t have the same drive and commitment to fulfilling their dreams that those of us whom they consider “overachievers” do…..and it’s ok! Those people are NOT part of your tribe! Keep shining, keep striving, and leave a little sparkle wherever you go!

My 2018 BloggerXchange Experience

My 2018 Blogger Xchange Experience

Dr April Blogger

This past weekend I attended the Inaugural Blogger Xchange Expo here in Nashville and it was nothing short of an amazing event! An entire weekend of networking with other bloggers, learning what’s new in the world of blogging, being introduced to some great brands I wasn’t previously familiar with……and all of this taking place in some great venues ( George Jones Restaurant/Bar/Museum, Redpepper Creative Agency, and Industrious Co-working office space in The Gulch)

I’ve been blogging since around 2012 and in that time, so many doors have been opened and opportunities afforded to me because of it. I’ve met many other creatives, content creators, restaurant owners, Chefs, appeared on a couple of TV food shows, been able to share my full-time career work as a Podiatrist, inspirational posts, service to my community, and……life in general etc. It’s been an AMAZING creative outlet for me!

Just as I attend medical conferences regularly to keep up with everything new in the medical world, I find it important to meet with other bloggers and creatives to stay in the know in this arena as well!

The masterminds behind Blogger Xchange are two lovely ladies, Leigh Love and Kay Elle, who orchestrated the event to a “T”! Everyone was speaking of how lovely it was!

Head on over to my Instagram feed ( @DinnerWithNerds ) for more pics with links to the Blogger Xchange Instagram feed as well as the other businesses/brands I discovered during the weekend.

Since this is the “Inaugural Expo”I assume there are more to come and I’m certainly looking forward to next year!

Figure Out What’s Really Important

Figure Out What’s Really Important

Dr. Carmen April

When you figure out what’s important in to you in this life, it’s easy to let go of what’s not. I can’t be everything to everybody and still be happy with myself so I’ve learned to focus on what’s important and let everything else fall into place as they may.

Where do your priorities stand? Do you feel pulled in many different directions and finding that you aren’t at peace with where those paths are taking you? If so, it’s time to make some changes! Make a list of the things/activities/roles in your life that are most important to you. These reflect your CORE desires. These are the big rocks you put in the bucket 1st. Everything else, the smaller rocks and the sand, fill in AFTER your priorities are taken care of. If you fill your bucket with the small rocks and sand first, there will be no room for those things most important to you. When you learn that you can count on yourself, nothing else counts!

Cheers to Six Years in Private Practice!

Cheers to Six Years in Private Practice!

6-years-private-practice

A little over 6.5 years ago I had a dream, a vision, a plan to start my own practice from scratch in the city of Nashville where I could count the number of people I knew here on one hand! It seemed like a daunting task to some, but I can honestly say that from the moment that idea planted itself in my mind, I fully believed I could do it, never doubted myself and never looked back! Statistics show that most small businesses fail within the first 5 years. In fact, more than 90% of them do. However, It’s been exactly 6 years since I opened my doors on Jan. 10th, 2011 with just 2 patients on a cold snowy, icy day and I’ve been rocking and rolling ever since! I thank God for it all, even the times I wanted to throw in the towel because I’ve grown from the experience. The Foot And Ankle Healthcare Center is not a side hustle or an extra job in addition to another. It’s my full time, 24-7, 365 days per year, even in the middle of the night when I get an emergency call, and even when I’m on “vacation”, baby!

It began with nothing more than a vision in my mind, God’s direction and provision, the support of my family, and has grown because of my dedicated work, the trust of medical colleagues referring their patients to me, friends and sorority sisters who are my “unofficial” marketing team and are always sending patients my way, and the support of the thousands of patients who have trusted me to care for them ! I’m #Grateful

Grateful for 5.5+ Years of Entrepreneurship

Grateful for 5.5+ Years of Entrepreneurship

Dr Carmen April Professional Photo

As those of you who regularly read my blog know, in addition to being a blogger I have a career…..the one that actually pays the bills and for which I studied and toiled and stayed in school and residency for what seemed like FOREVER to achieve lol! As “Dr. Carmen April” I am an entrepreneur and owner of my medical practice, The Foot And Ankle Healthcare Center, PC for the past 5 years. When I was first getting started in my medical practice, I heard over and over and OVER again that most small businesses fail within their first couple of years of operation. In fact, that statistic is more specifically around 90% of small businesses FAILING in their first couple of years. Making it to 5 years is definitely something to be celebrated and I certainly have! I thank God every SINGLE day for the success of my business!

There have been times, especially in the beginning where I grew weary because the money coming into the business seemed to be at a snail’s pace compared to the money going out! There have been many times where I have been frustrated with dealing with health insurance companies lowering reimbursements year after year when the cost of doing business continues to increase. There are many things that I, along with any other entrepreneur COULD complain about and have complained about as it pertains to our businesses, BUT the day I started to express more GRATITUDE than I did complain about everything that was wrong in the medical industry, a SHIFT happened! It was as if expressing Gratitude un-clogged a pipe and allowed an abundance of good things to flow into my medical practice! Opportunities for financial increase came my way and I was in position to take full advantage of it.

Some entrepreneurs are afraid to openly talk about “money” especially in fields that service people and the community, such as in medicine. My main job as a doctor is to diagnose and treat my patients with the best medical care possible and I’m confident I do that. However, if the money is not available to run the business properly, that does not happen. Entrepreneurs have to get comfortable talking about money! When it comes to the finances of my business, My small business is no different from the big hospitals and health centers, no different from your every day restaurant or clothing store. They all require positive cash flow, great report with patients/clients and the community, marketing, advertising, good money management, etc to make them successful.

It’s been 6+ years since I first nurtured the idea of starting my own practice and it’s still amazing to think back on every storm I weathered to get to this very point. A couple THOUSAND patients later from the first day I hung my shingle and opened the doors to my practice, I have a renewed strength and tenacity to see it grow even more! God is great and I give Him all the glory and honor for the success of The Foot And Ankle Healthcare Center, PC!

My prayer for my business: “Lord, I thank you for giving me the idea and the courage to pursue my dream of starting my own medical practice. The opportunity came before I thought I was ready to take the leap, but you had already equipped me with everything I needed to get it done! Every bit of any amount of success I have experienced in this business is because of you and for that I say Thank You. During the trials, and doubts, and hard times, you were also there and didn’t let me fall. You didn’t let me quit. I continue to pray for every single patient who walks through the doors of this practice. Bless them Lord and bless me to use my knowledge, skills and intuition to medically treat them to the best of my ability. Bless my employees that they continue to find satisfaction in their work with me and this business and allow them to be a blessing to the patients as well. I know that these accomplishments you’ve allowed me to have at such a young age, inspire others and for that I am Grateful! There have been many people along the way who I have looked to for inspiration and I’m glad that I’m now able to pay it forward. Lord, continue to allow me to uplift, encourage and inspire other people through the work of my mind and my hands. I pray that all my endeavors are prosperous and are used to serve you and uplift your kingdom! In your son Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.” –Carmen

On Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Service

Dr. Carmen April

A couple of weeks ago my really great friend/College Roommate/Sorority Sister, Sirobe, featured me on her blog. I was tickled pink over this because she is one of the most creative people I’ve ever met in my life and am honored that she’s featured me! She interviewed me about everything from Entrepreneurship and Leadership to proper foot health and my annual sock drive. We talked for well over an hour and somehow she managed to whittle the interview down to the three features you can find here:

Think Before You Post!

Think Before You Post!

Think before post

I was doing a Keynote Lecture Presentation at a Leadership Conference a while back and had a question posed by an audience member that I thought was great to share here. I was presenting on Leadership and specifically how Blogging can be used to Build a Brand and become a thought Leader in any given field. A Young Woman in the audience raised her hand after my presentation and says she has subjects she wants to blog about, but that she would not necessarily want an employer or someone hiring her for a job to see. She asked me what she should do…………..

DON’T POST IT!

You should assume that ANYTHING posted on the internet, whether it be on blogs, social media, YouTube, emails etc is there forever! You should never post anything to the internet that you’re not comfortable with everyone seeing!

I’ve read statistics that as high as 60% of HR and hiring managers “Google” potential job candidates during the search process. You certainly don’t want them coming across information that would be detrimental to your reputation or you being hired for or keeping a job.

Trust your gut! If your gut is telling you not to post something to the internet or emails (especially work emails!!) DON’T do it!

THINK BEFORE YOU POST!
