5 Leadership Lessons Learned From The Early Failures of R.H. Macy

5 Leadership Lessons Learned From The Early

Failures of R.H. Macy

Macy's Leadership

I was in Macy’s Department Store recently shopping for a new ensemble to wear for an upcoming speaking engagement. Since I’m constantly thinking about all things Leadership, I thought about the story of how Macy’s got started. Macy’s was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy, who between 1843 and 1855, opened four retail dry goods stores, including the original Macy’s store in downtown Haverhill, MA to serve the mill industry employees of the area. Each one of Macy’s original stores FAILED! Macy did not let those failures stop him and instead learned from them. Here are 5 Leadership lessons learned from the early failures of R. H. Macy:

1.) Failure is only permanent if you don’t learn from it.

We all fail. Period. Show me a person who has not failed and I will show you a person who has never tried anything new. R.H. Macy had 4 stores to fail when he started out. Most people would have thrown in the towel after just 1 store failure! He refused to let those business failures be the end of his story and he tried again. Failure is an opportunity to start again with more insight. The smartest leaders and business people will most likely agree that they have learned more from their failures than they have from their successes.

2.) Learn how to Re-strategize

After the failure of the first 4 stores, he decided to move to New York City from Haverhill, MA. He staked out a niche for himself in a brand new environment. When you encounter failure, as you most certainly will if you ever expect to make progress in anything, you must master the art of the “Pivot”. Continuing to do the same things that have not been working is insanity, but learning how to pivot away from what is not working and develop a new strategy is sometimes exactly what is needed to finally experience the expected result.

3.) Every Expert was once a novice – We must all start somewhere!

After the failure of Macy’s first 4 stores, he moved to New York City in 1958 and established a new store named R.H. Macy & Co. on Sixth Avenue, much further north than where similar stores were located. On the first day of business in October 28, 1858, his sales totaled $11.08, equal to about $301.47 today. I would venture to guess that now Macy’s probably makes that amount in sales just about every second of the day!

4.) Establish your BRAND early on

Ever wonder where that iconic Macy’s Logo originated? As a teenager working on a Nantucket whaling ship, R.H. Macy got a tattoo of a star. That star became the logo that continues to serve as the identification of the Macy’s brand throughout the world. Some leaders have a hard time thinking of themselves as a “brand” or understanding the importance of it. However, if you think of it this way, BRAND = REPUTATION, that makes it a lot easier to understand. We all have a reputation. What is your Leadership reputation? Realize that you have the power to craft your Brand Reputation in a manner that represents your authentic Leadership Style!

5.) Be so good at what you do that your name becomes synonymous with quality, class and trustworthiness

There’s no doubt that the Macy’s brand is well-respected throughout the world for quality service and products. In order to be a respected leader you must gain the trust of your team and build a reputation that others respect. Your team should be confident in knowing they can look up to you to lead the team in a shared vision.

The next time you are shopping at Macy’s, think about the fact that had R.H Macy given up on is endeavor to have a successful department store, there would be no Macy’s Department stores for you to frequent in almost every mall in America. There would be no Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, no beautiful Christmas Day Display in the window at the Macy’s in New York City. This company is where it is today because Mr. Macy did not let a temporary setback stop him from trying again!

Is there a Leadership vision, goal, or endeavor you gave up on because of a one time failure? If its success is important enough to you, declare to yourself  Today that you will try again!

How Your Dominating Thoughts Control Who You Are

How Your Dominating Thoughts Control Who You

Are

wisdom

I’ve been reading a lot from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich lately and can’t express enough how it’s one of the BEST books I’ve ever read! I could write a million blog posts inspired by the information Hill shares in this book – it’s just that good! One of the concepts in the book is stated this way, “Each of us is what we are because of the dominating thoughts we permit to occupy our minds”.

Let’s look at examples of this from both sides of the coin. In cases of verbal and emotional child abuse, children who are told they are stupid, ugly and worthless have a hard time healing emotionally from that abuse as they get older. They internalize that abuse and it can become reality.

In Napoleon Hill’s book, he highlights that a common thread among the world’s wealthiest, most successful people is that they are persistent in their ideas of acquiring personal success and wealth. The concept of persistence is important here. These individuals think positively on ways to get what they want and don’t give up at the slightest of setbacks.

It’s almost intuitive that we express what we think about most, but seeing it written in this manner in “Think And Grow Rich” was really an Aha Moment for me! Not too long ago, I experienced some entrepreneurial struggles that I just couldn’t seem to find the right solution for – that is, until I changed my mindset! Instead of thinking, “How in the heck am I going to figure this one out?”, I started believing that the solution to the problem was already out there, I just had to open my mind to receive it. Every time I began to get upset about the situation, I started the practice of shutting the negative thoughts down and replacing them with positive affirmations of receiving the solution. Had I continued to let toxic ideas manifest in my psyche, garbage would have begun to flow out! By thinking on positive outcomes, I began to explore more positive solutions to the problem. In the end, I found a solution to the problem, in large part, because of my outlook and the thoughts I let occupy my mind!

Identify a negative thought you have been allowing to dominate your mind. What single thought can you use to think positively, instead.

5 Tips to Make Networking Work Better for You

5 Tips to Make Networking Work Better for You

2013 Nashville Emerging Leader Award Finalist Reception

(Photo Credit: Nashville Chamber of Commerce)

I love Networking! I frequently attend Networking events because it’s awesome to walk into a room with other business-minded individuals and make mutually beneficial business connections. When I first moved to Nashville 3 years ago (almost 4 years ago now), I knew only 2 people – My sister, who was in Dental School at the time, and a college friend/sorority sister. That’s it! So, when I took the leap of faith to start my own medical practice after living here for only 2 months, my lack of connections in Nashville was a HUGE obstacle for me. However, I networked the pure HECK out of Nashville and have made so many connections that, as I look back on it now, astonishes me!

I’m was honored to be a 2013 Nashville Emerging Leader Award Finalist! Here I am networking with some of the attendees at the Finalist Reception in June 2013

(Photo Credit: Nashville Chamber of Commerce)

I believe that being able to effectively network is an art form. For me, networking did not come second nature. Even though I love to sit down and talk for hours with people that I know and am familiar with, walking up to random people and saying “Hi, I’m Carmen April. How are you? Tell me what you do for a living” was not always as easy for me as it is now. Just like anything you want to become good at, it requires repetition and practice. Making meaningful business connections is essential to both my medical practice and my blog so being comfortable in large networking environments is a MUST!

(Photo Credit: Nashville Chamber of Commerce)

Here are 5 Tips to help you make the most out of Networking:

1.) Attend Events that are specifically structured for Networking. When you attend events that are designed specifically for networking, everyone shows up with the same intention. You are not left wondering if the people you meet have ulterior motives for chatting with you. Everyone is there, or should be there, to make meaningful business connections. I have taken my enthusiasm for networking to some laid-back social gatherings and, unfortunately, have had people look at me like I have 3 eyes on my forehead when I walk up and introduce myself the way I do at networking events. This is not to say that networking does not take place at social gatherings; in fact, it should!

2.) Dress Professionally. We form opinions about others in the first 7-9 seconds of meeting them. Don’t you want the lasting impression someone makes of you to be a positive one, especially when business is involved?

3.) Have your Elevator Speech Prepared and Practiced. An Elevator Speech is your 30-45 second description of who you are, what you do and how you and your business can be of benefit to others. You should be able to clearly articulate this description in the time that it takes you to ride in an elevator with someone from the bottom to the top floor in 30-45 seconds or less. You risk loosing someones attention when you ramble. Because the most common question asked of you during networking will be, “So, tell me what you do for a living?”, you should practice your response (Elevator Speech) because you know it will be asked. It should roll off your tongue like butter!

4.) Have Business Cards on Hand. Your business card should be clean with your name, business logo, phone number,  business email address and business website listed. I can not tell you how annoying it is to receive an old, crinkled business card that has probably been sitting in someones pocket or wallet for who knows how long. Your business card is a tangible piece of your professional brand and it can speak for you in your absence. I keep business cards that I receive during networking by scanning it into one of my favorite apps – Evernote, and also placing it in a business card holding folder that I keep in my office. Additionally, I write down where I met the person, the date and the year, directly on the card.

5.) Follow-up. What is the point of networking if you are not going to make use of the meaningful connections? Networking is for making the initial connections, but it should not stop there. If you meet someone at an event and identify that you can be of benefit to their business, they can be of benefit to your business, or vice versa, you should set up a time to grab coffee, lunch or a cocktail. Send an email to those connections after the event saying that you enjoyed meeting them and would like to meet them again for coffee, etc and discuss ideas. The follow-up is usually where the real connections come about.

I hope these tips help you on your next Networking excursion!

15 Ways to Cheer Yourself Up from a Day that Sucks

15 Ways to Cheer Yourself Up from a Day That Sucks

 happy

Just admit it. No matter how “together” we try to run our daily lives, there are days that just plain suck! I had one of those days last week . I woke up with the best intentions for my day going great. I prayed to God for a good day before my feet even hit the floor that morning. I had a delicious breakfast and even snuck in a couple swigs of Mountain Dew (it’s my equivalent of coffee) before I left home for my office. So how in the world did I feel totally defeated by the time the clock struck 5pm???

I have several ways of dealing with this type of day and I’m sharing some of those with you below. Some are things I’ve actually done, some are things that I’m mustering up the courage to do the next time a bad day rolls around and some are things little birdies have stopped by to tell me they’ve done (LOL). I’ll leave it up to you to decipher which is which 🙂 Here it goes:

1.) Find the best 90’s R&B Satellite Radio Station, turn it up, stand in the middle of a room that echos – hairbrush in hand as a microphone, and sing like you’re one of the last 3 contestants standing on American Idol!

2.) Buy the largest container of Vanilla and Salted Caramel Gelato in the grocery store freezer section and eat half of it before you even leave the grocery store parking lot

3.) Flip to the On-Demand station of Comcast and watch the past 3 episodes of  your favorite TV show, the same ones you’ve seen twice already

4.) Head to the nail shop to get your toenails painted, even in the dead of winter. Sit in the massage chair for a full 30 minutes after your nails have been polished. Don’t judge. Those massage chairs are awesome!

5.) Drink a glass, or two of a great white wine…….in the extra-large Olivia Pope style wine glasses!

6.) Retail Therapy – Set a budget though. Retail therapy while you are feeling ‘some kinda way’ can have horrible consequences

7. )Put on your best pair of running shoes and hit the pavement with no set destination in mind. Just run for exercise until you get tired…..

8.) Call it a night around 6pm. Lights out………………………………

9.) Have a glass of wine, imagine yourself as a character in a romantic novel………then call it a night around 7pm. Lights out……………………………….

10.) Read a really good book from cover to cover

11.) Go for a ride in a really wealthy neighborhood and imagine what it would be like to live there. If you already live in one of these neighborhoods……never mind.

12.) Cook a huge pot of pasta, preferably Fettuccine Alfredo! Throw in some chicken and Broccoli. It’s a great comfort food.

13.) Have a really good cry about the day that sucked 😦

14.) Pack a bag or two, book a flight, and leave for the Bahamas to enjoy some sun for a day or two

15.) Blog about 15 ways to cheer yourself up from a day that sucks!

Tell me, what do you do to turn a horrible day around??

Your Playing Small Does Not Serve The World

“Our deepest Fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest Fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that scares us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? You are a Child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically LIBERATES OTHERS.

— Marianne Williamson

Your Playing Small Does Not Serve The World

Your Playing Small Does Not Serve the World

There is so much good teaching going on in this quote that I have to marinate on it for a while and break it down into little, bitty pieces! What I’m focusing on is the part of this quote where Marianne says “Your playing small does not serve the world”! Let me let you in on little something, I literally just got up and did my happy dance right here in my office! I wholeheartedly believe that we starve the world of our gifts when we play it small! it takes the same amount of energy to ‘think small” as it does to “think big” so why in the world do we waste our time on things that ultimately don’t matter and don’t help to make our lives or those around us any better.

Fear is one of the main reasons we “play small”. We are afraid of what others will think, we are afraid we wont be good enough to accomplish our goals. When we can’t put all the pieces together from the get-go and can’t see the end in sight, we get nervous.

Peer Pressure, the desire to conform, is another big reason people often ‘play small’. I speak to a number of youth and high school groups on the topics of life skills, career choices, etc. I’ve had young ladies come up to me after my workshops/lectures and express that parents, family members and friends discourage them from their goals essentially because they perceive them to be ‘too lofty’. I encourage these ladies to be careful of taking advice from ‘any ole’ body’ because people too weak to follow their own dreams will often find a way to discourage yours. They may not understand the gift God has placed in your heart because God gave the insight to YOU, not them! Those not privy to the information will not understand it. Most of the visions that God has ever placed in my heart all started out sounding really crazy because of how GRAND they were! But, I serve an Extraordinary God! He doesn’t do anything half-way or pint-sized! What’s even more awesome is that when my dreams/visions manifested, they turned out much greater than I could have ever imagined and God gets the glory for it!

Be aware that peer pressure is not limited to school age children and youth. Adults experience it as well and sometimes to a much greater degree. I’ve talked with adults who are apprehensive about being proactive in the workplace for fear of being perceived as ‘too aggressive’. I’ve known women who “dumb-down” when dating men because they don’t want to “scare” men off. That’s crazy. What happens when the flirtation phase of meeting someone starts to fade and the individuals’ true character emerges? A man who can’t recognize or appreciate a woman who is using her gifts to Glorify God is not a man I want to be in a relationship with….Period!

What purpose does an unopened gift serve? Absolutely NOTHING! The giver of the gift is not pleased, the recipient of the gift can never experience the joy that comes from it and the gift itself goes to waste and never gets to shine. The people who feel insecure by your gift will feel insecure whether you use it or not because………. that’s just how insecure people are and you can’t change that. You were not born to make God look like an “ok” God that crates mediocre people. Not at all! God creates us to be wonderful, excellent manifestations of His love and to use the gifts He has given us!. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as if working for God and not for man.” Never play small to satisfy the insecurities of others. I serve a God who is much BIGGER and BETTER than that! Those who are intent on feeling insecure while I do the work God has set out for me to do, can have a seat, sit back and watch me work!

What steps can you take, starting today, to live life in a more bold and intentional way???

When Do The Stars Shine?

My parents live out in the country where it is beautiful, quiet, and serene. At night, it’s really dark outside because there aren’t tons of street lights, fluorescent fast food restaurant signs, etc. Nighttime in the country is awesome because you can see the stars shining so bright!

When do the stars shine?

“You may not always know the details of your Journey or clearly see where the trail is leading, but the Universe will always give you enough light to take the next step”

Let me pose the question…when do the starts shine? Most people will answer that the stars shine at night. However, the correct answer is that the stars actually shine all the time! However, in order to see the brilliance and beauty of the stars it has to be dark outside. Sometimes, we have to go through seasons of darkness in order to see light shine through in our lives. Those dark times are usually very uncomfortable and can cause us to fumble haphazardly because we can’t clearly see what is going on around us. We can often feel alone and nervous. Sometimes, it’s downright scary because we can’t see what’s in front of us. However, focusing on that little glimmer of light that comes from those stars is enough illumination to light our path. What I have found to be true out in the country at night is that if you stand still long enough to let the pupils of your eyes dilate (become larger to let in more light), you can actually start to identify shadows and objects and can see the stars more clear.

A plaque my mom gave me in college states the following:

You may not always know the details of your journey or clearly see where the trail is leading, but the Universe will always give you enough light to take the next step.”

Everything We Own, Owns Us

Everything We Own, Owns Us

life coach, nashville life coach

In the Book Margin, the author Dr. Richard Swenson states “We all consume significant amounts of time in the buying and maintaining of things. A life of voluntary simplicity and contentment, on the other hand, is opposed to the unnecessary proliferation of material possessions.  It is free of the clutter most of society must sort through on a daily basis. With fewer possessions, we do not have as many things to take care of. With a simpler wardrobe, our choice of what to wear each morning becomes less time consuming. With a smaller estate, there will be less debt bondage in our work schedule.

Everything we own, owns us. We must maintain it, paint it, play with it. Build space in our house to put it and then work to pay it off. Perhaps if we had fewer things, we would have more time…..
Recognize unnecessary possessions for what they are, stealers of divine time. At the beginning of every day we are given assignments that have eternal significance – to serve, to love, to obey, to pray. Instead, we squander much of this time on things that will soon leave us forever”
——

Wow……..Was that as much of a gut check for you as it was for me the first time I read it?!? We have become so busy with “stuff” that we don’t have time to “stop and smell the roses”. I’ve certainly been in this place before and even though it was exciting for a while, I quickly burned myself out. I longed for “free” time, for time I could spend doing the things purposeful for my life.

Guess what? I didn’t just talk about making changes, it did it! I stopped accepting “let’s grab coffee” meetings to be pitched services and products that I had no interest in or letting people “pick my brain” about how I run my business or my blog. My time is valuable and time is money. There are people who make a living by providing the same information I was giving away for free! I created more behind the scenes structure for my Food Blog and mapped out a year long editorial calendar……Boy did that feel great! I purposefully spent more time reading the Bible and being in communication with God through prayer. I even wrote an article titled “The Art of Saying ‘No’ In Business” that was published in YFS Magazine with the premise being that saying ‘no’ to some things is essentially saying ‘yes’ to time better spent.

What are some things you know you need to say “no” to in order to allow room for more meaningful time in your life?

Just Get Started

Just Get Started!

Hello World!

This is the very first Blog post on my new site, DrCarmenApril.com ! Because I also maintain a website for my medical practice, along with several social media accounts, I wanted to create a “home base” for them all. It is here that I will also share my ideas and opinions to encourage others in the areas of entrepreneurship and personal development.

I’ve had the idea to create this site for over a year and between running a practice, staying busy with my food blog and serving my community, I had a hard time just “getting started” on this new site. I even found myself getting frustrated because it was constantly on my “To-Do list” since I wasn’t being proactive in getting it done. Here’s a little FYI about me……… I Looooooove to scratch items off my To-Do List. It’s one of the things that brings me joy each and every day. I’m totally being serious when I say this! I get so much satisfaction from checking off my list and throwing it away at the end of the day…..Yes!

Having this site to house my online presence makes me happy! I have some awesome new projects that I’m working on in 2014 and this is step #1  in that process. A favorite Bible verse of mine kept filling my Spirit during the process of creating this site. In Genesis 12:1-2 God tells Abraham to “go to the land I will show you”. “12 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your family and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation. I will bring good to you. I will make your name great, so you will be honored.”

God's Blessings

What I have learned from this scripture is that God tells Abraham to go to the land He will show him, not a land He has already shown him. Furthermore, after God said these things, He stopped talking. Abraham didn’t know what was in store, where he was supposed to be going, how he was going to get there, how long it would take to get there, what dangers he would encounter along the way, etc. God told him to go and just get started. God also promised that if Abraham was obedient in this endeavor, He would bring good to him and bless him and honor him. There’s motivation in this story for me.

I don’t know about you, but this is sometimes the thought process in my head when I’m trying to accomplish “big things’! Like, how is God just gonna tell Abraham something that GRAND and then just stop talking? Here’s what goes through my mind in these situations…..what am I supposed to do next? How am I gonna do this? How long is this gonna take? Where am I gonna get the money? I don’t know if I can do all of that…….” Does this sound familiar to anyone else????

I could have continued to take on additional projects and put this on the back burner, but for reasons I’m sure will be revealed to me in due time, I decided to just get started, trust, obey, and go! One of the reasons has already been made clear to me – 1.) This new site brings some order into my life because I consider it Grand Central Station for all of my website, blog and social media sites. I pray that the inspirations I share on this blog are received by the people who need to hear and read them the most. I’m pretty sure a blessing or 2 or 3 or 4……will come out of that as well 🙂

Caring is sharing so please, if my posts resonate with you in any form or fashion, leave a comment, share the post via social media or email, send me an email, send a dancing telegram (lol) or something to let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you!

Peace & Blessings!
